Cinderella

Once upon a time there lived a golden retriever named Cinderella. When Cinderella was just a little puppy her owner brought her home from the pet store. He treated her very well and gave her the most delicious treats. Cinderella’s owner often took her on long walks in the park and they played fetch almost every day. Cinderella loved her owner very much and couldn’t imagine how lucky she was.

One day Cinderella’s owner announced that he was getting married, which meant she would have a new step-owner. This step-owner had two greyhounds that would be her new playmates! Cinderella was very excited and anxious to meet her soon to be step-sisters.

When Cinderella’s step-owner and step-sisters moved in she was in for a rude awakening. Cinderella’s step-sisters never wanted to play with her and her step-owner made her do chores, such as burying bones in the backyard and scaring away the squirrels. Cinderella befriended the squirrels in secrecy since her step-sisters didn’t like her, which upset her very much,

A few weeks after the move in Cinderella’s owner sadly passed away. She was heartbroken and scared that her step-owner would make her do even more chores. Her step-sisters continued to exclude her and laugh at her, which made her feel even worse.

One day an invitation arrived in the mail that Cinderella’s step-owner read aloud. It was an invitation to a dog show! The show was being held to find a companion for a Labrador retriever named Prince Charming. He was the best fetch player in the land and Cinderella couldn’t wait to go.

In preparation for the show Cinderella’s squirrel friends helped to make her a collar since she didn’t have one of her own. They collected walnuts and pinecones and made a beautiful collar. Cinderella cleaned her coat until it was extra shiny. The night of the show Cinderella’s step-sisters laughed at her when she tried to get in the car. Cinderella’s step-owner told her that she could not possibly go to the show because she had too many bones to bury in the backyard.

Cinderella’s squirrel friends were very angry that her step-owner had been so mean. Cinderella herself was upset but decided that she might as well get a head start on her chores. While burying bones in the yard there was a rustling in the bushes and a white Pomeranian appeared who announced herself to be Cinderella’s fairy god dog.

With the flick of a paw and a barked “bippity boppity boo” Cinderella’s fairy god dog turned her makeshift collar into a sparkling glass collar. She turned the squirrels into owners and Cinderella’s dog house into a jeep for them to drive her to the ball in. She warned Cinderella that she had to be home before midnight because that is when the magic would wear off.

When Cinderella arrived at the dog show she instantly caught the attention of Prince Charming. He invited her outside to play fetch. They were getting along really well and Cinderella found that Prince Charming was the perfect playmate! He made her very happy unlike her step-sisters, who were busy brooding over how Prince Charming wasn’t paying attention to them.

Midnight was approaching quickly and Cinderella realized that she had to be home soon or her step-owner would realize she had gone to the show and the magic would wear off. She told Prince Charming she had to leave but he begged her to stay. She shook her head no and her collar fell off, but she had no time to retrieve it.

Cinderella made it home just in time. The jeep returned back to being a dog house and the owners retreated to their squirrel form. Cinderella was so happy and realized she wanted more than anything to be Prince Charming’s companion. However Cinderella could not stay happy because her step-owner and step-sisters returned and barked orders at her, making her realize that she was nothing but a poor dog who would probably never see Prince Charming again.

Meanwhile, Prince Charming couldn’t get his mind off of Cinderella. He had her collar in his dog house and was determined to find her. He barked to his friends that he would not sleep until he found her. They all set out on a search party.

Prince Charming visited every dog house in the area in search of Cinderella. When he arrived at her home her step-sisters tried to pretend that it was their collar, but Prince Charming remembered that Cinderella was certainly not a greyhound. He asked if anyone lived in the dog house that seemed to be empty, and they said that there were no other dogs that lived there besides them. Cinderella, however, was returning from burying bones as Prince Charming was leaving. He immediately recognized her.

Prince Charming barked to Cinderella that she was done burying bones and should come live at the royal palace with him. He wanted more than anything for her to stay with him so that they could play fetch everyday. Cinderella’s step-sisters were very jealous and angry, but they deserved to feel that way after how they treated her. Prince Charming invited Cinderella’s squirrel friends to come along as well! Cinderella did not hesitate to agree and the two walked back to the palace together, wagging their tails and smiling ear to ear.

The End.

I’m glad I’m a boy!: I’m glad I’m a girl! is  a book that perfectly sheds the common gender stereotypes in today’s society. In this book the many different stereotypes of girls and boys are shared. For example, on one page it says, “Boys can eat.” and on the next page it says, “Girls can cook.” This very clearly addresses the idea that people today think girls are the ones who are supposed to cook and the boys are the ones that always can eat it. There are many more examples on the other pages of other stereotypes and beliefs about boys versus girls. What this book does not address is the idea that boys and girls are capable of doing the same things. It does not express equity among gender. Instead, it only discusses  what people assume boys and girls do and what they are expected to do or be good at. This would be a good book for children to read to understand what the different stereotypes are between girls and boys. But this book would not be a good choice for a child to read if they do not know that this book is showing the stereotypes. If they do not know then they will follow the footsteps of everyone else that believes in the stereotypes.

The book “Shades of People” is a great book to show little kids. It is a great way to introduce to children that there are many different types of people out there and it is normal to see people of different shades. The book explains how everywhere you go you will see different shades of people. Even within one family there can be different types of people. This book does a good job showing that it is okay to be different and that it is normal for no two people to look exactly alike. The last page of the book says, “In the world, there’s light and dark, and everything in between.” I think this is very important for young children to learn at an early age. No two people in this world are the same and there are many different types and shades of people. The earlier children learn this, the better.

There are many stereotypes that are still floating around today. People form opinions about people that are of a different race before they ever meet the person. They decide in their head whether or not they will like the person and how they are going to portray them. They get these ideas from people around them, the media, and from past experiences. But what many people don’t realize is that we are all human. No matter what race we are, we are all humans, and when it comes down to it, we are alike in a lot of ways. We may all have different cultural backgrounds, and slightly different ways of living, but when it comes down to the “nitty gritty”, we are all human and many aspects of our lives are similar. In the children’s book “Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin”, Duncan Tonatiuhn compares the life of two cousins. One lives in Mexico and the other lives in America. Throughout the book we read excerpts from each of the letters that the boys wrote. We learn about each of their lives and parts of each of their cultures.  Carlitos, the cousin from Mexico, shares the type of community where he lives with his family. He talks about the farm and the things they grow. Charlie, the cousin from America, lives in the city and shares with his cousin his view of skyscrapers and stars. Yes, they both live in very different communities, but they both have a place they call home, a place where they are surrounded and loved by their family, and a place to feel safe at. Carlitos plays soccer with his friends in Mexico, and Charlie plays basketball in America. Both boys are out playing with their friends. In both Mexico and America kids enjoy interacting with their friends outside and engaging in many different activities. The activities may be different, but in both places they are outside and being social. Another example of how we are all really alike is with community recourses. No matter where you are; America, Mexico, or anywhere else, you need food.  What makes us different is how and where we get the food. In Mexico, Carlitos goes with his family to open-air markets. They also grow their food on their farm. In America, Charlie goes with his mom to the supermarket and buys all of their food there. The different cultures of these boys allow for them to be different in how they obtain their food, but they are both human and need food. One last example of this addressed in the book is about celebrations.  No matter where you go in the world, every culture has many traditions and customs. In Mexico they have fiestas that last for days. They celebrate many different things with these fiestas. In America, in places such as New York City, there are parades that, as well, celebrate many American aspects. In both of these places, traditions are taking place. Even though they are for different things, both Americans and Mexicans take pride in their culture and are willing to celebrate about it. People use stereotypes to categorize people that are different then themselves. It is easy for us to assume things about people and not give them a chance. But what many people do not realize is that behind the different cultures and beliefs, we all are human and are very much alike. We all have morals, and though some of our beliefs may be different, we are just people. We are all trying to succeed in life.  Black, white, Hispanic, or whatever race you may be, people are people, and deep down we are all very similar.

I really enjoyed listening to Kekauleleanae”ole and his family talk about the book. I think the story they are sharing is an amazing story. The book was really well written and flowed nicely. I thought the illustrations were really awesome as well. I think the message Kekauleleanae”ole’s grandfather shared with us was very moving. I agree completely with everything he was saying. I agree that it is very important for people to know about their family and where they came from. It got me thinking about how I don/t really know that much about my family. But I think it is something that is very important for people to know. I also think it is something that should among different people. I think if people have the opportunity to learn about other families’ pasts, you gain a much better sense of culture and can really learn a lot. I think what Kekauleleanae”ole and his family are doing is really cool. Not only are they taking the risk and sharing with everyone their family culture, but they are also educating Hawaiians and non Hawaiians about the Hawaiian culture. I am really interested to see what he comes up with next.

I remember as a child constantly wanting to read the Dr. Seuss book, “Horton Hears a Who!” It was a book that I always had my mom read to me. I was really interested in Who-ville, and when I read it, I always wished I could see what it was really like there. Every time I would read the book, even though I knew how it ended, I would always get very frustrated with the kangaroo because he couldn’t hear the people screaming. I always enjoyed reading it.

I think it shows a good message to little kids. It harps on the idea that big or small, no matter what size, people are people. The same goes for skin color. No matter what skin color someone is, in the end they are still a person. I think this is something that is really important for little kids to grasp on. Especially when they are first being introduced are surrounded by people of different races. As a little child, at first you might have no idea what it is you are looking at. And so it is very important to understand the fact that no matter what, people are people. I think this book does a good job expressing that.

I can remember as a child reading A TON of children books. There was one that really stuck out to me and really meant something to me. I could really relate to it. It was called “Owen.” The book is about a little mouse who has a yellow blanket. He carries it around with him everywhere he goes. No matter what he is doing. The whole book is about Owen carrying around his blanket, Fuzzy, and all of the things he does with it. As a kid I could really relate to this book. When I was born my parents gave me a yellow blanket. I, like Owen, took it everywhere I went starting at birth. I never wanted to leave it behind. My parents would try to take it from me, or make me leave it at home, but that was always a struggle for them. I was attached. Just like Owen was. When my mom first showed me the book I really liked it. I wanted to read it ALL THE TIME. I liked the fact that I was just like Owen, with my yellow blanket.
